Textsammlung zu nationalen Denkmälern in Deutschland vom 19. Jahrhundert bis zur Gegenwart, zusammengestellt von Ulrike Barwanietz und Nina Kalenbach

The show presents a proposal and a model for the Nationaldenkmal: Monument for Unity and Freedom - which was originally developed by Clegg & Guttmann for a public competition in Berlin 2010. The proposal serves as departure point for an extended discussion about national monuments in Germany from 1830 to the present. Towards that aim the Open Debate Station, a table with two microphones and amplification system was placed in the center of the gallery. The table serves as a device to facilitate dialogues between two parties that eventually will form a public discussion about the function and purpose of monuments in creating the sense of national narrative, form of identification and collective memory.

A collection of textual materials related to the national monuments in Germany is presented in custom made shelves to form a small archive of national monuments (researched by Ulrike Barwanietz and Nina Kalenbach). In addition to the archive a visual essay, a collection of images of national monuments, divided into four main categories: National Allegories – the Father, Dedication –Demontage, Divided Country – Occupation memorials and Appropriation.

The exhibition began by a discussion between a group of artists and art historians who are interested in the subject. A recording of the talks can be heard during the show and will be available on the internet site of the gallery.

Further public discussions are planned to take place, outdoors in the vicinity of local monuments  - the dates will be announced.
